LOS ANGELES & CATALINA

June 2003

One fine memory, among many, from a wonderful coastwalk:

This is a poem from Coastwalker Jennifer Sills, who became a cowgirl poet at the hikers’ talent show on the LA County/Catalina Island Coastwalk in June 2003. Jennifer’s work was inspired by cowboy poet Steve Deming, who entertained us with poetry and music on the first night of our trip.

It all started way down south, on the California Coast, they say
When a horseless group of wandering souls wended on their way.
A wild and distant isle was their lofty goal,
And sticking to their courses, wore their trekking shoes to the sole.

Starting high above the Pacific, a quarry did they explore,
While smelling sage and anise above the ocean shore,
And hearing tales of other treks and history of yore.
Trudging along the shoreline, rock by rock they went.
After a sumptuous feast, they fell into their tents.

Early the next morning they had still not reached the isle,
So quickly on to a large boat, the Coastwalkers did pile.
With eyes wide open, and traveling winds a’blowing,
Our adventurers found their island, but still kept going.

Up above Two Harbors, tents perched on hillside tops.
Another fabulous dinner and into slumber they did drop.
Step by step and hour by hour,
Coastwalkers went up hills,
Walking over and on the cliffs with only minor spills.

The Crest Ridge Trail in all its beauty, showed a splendid view,
And finally down to grassy ground they ambled down at two.
Here they sit on sandy beach as crashing waves they hear,
Enjoying friends both new and old, creating memories dear.

Life should stay so simple as we keep on walking through,
Taking time to say hello, and stopping to breathe in the view.
