On this four day hike (Friday morning to Monday late afternoon), we’ll explore some of the most stunning terrain around the San Francisco Bay, viewing the Golden Gate Bridge from at least eight vantage points. We begin in Tiburon (Marin County) with a ferry ride to historic Angel Island where we will spend two days exploring its natural and man-made history. Being on the Island after the tourists have gone is an experience not to be missed. Highlights include a visit to the newly restored Immigration Station, where Chinese immigrants were imprisoned in the early part of the last century; a tour of the many sites used while the Island was a military base, the Civil War era buildings; and a hike to the top of the Island for a 360 degree view of the Bay. Angel Island was the site of a wildfire in the summer of 2008, and we’ll see firsthand how nature is taking this opportunity to return the Island to its natural state.
Sunday we’ll take another ferry ride, this time into San Francisco, where our home base will be the Hostel in Fort Mason. We’ll explore the fascinating beauty of the intersection of the City’s eclectic architecture and San Francisco's dramatic coastline. On our final day we cross the Golden Gate Bridge, and hike to beautiful Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands, where we will share our final meal. We will sleep indoors each night, so no tent required.
Maximum enrollment is 30.
