Sonoma County’s cadre of Coastwalk volunteers has planned a great Coastwalk adventure for the 2008 season, highlighting some of the newest acquisitions in the State Parks system as well as some of the most beautiful sections of the California Coastal Trail.
Starting on Tuesday July 15, we’ll meet at Armstrong Woods State Reserve near Guerneville. After a short introductory loop hike through the stately redwoods we’ll drive to Jenner and leave our private vehicles in a secure parking area. A short shuttle will take us to Willow Creek, a recent 3,400 acre addition to Sonoma Coast State Beach and available to the public by special permit only. Here we’ll walk the pristine ridges and riparian areas to the Pomo Canyon Environmental Camp for a night of tenting under the redwoods.
On Wednesday after breakfast we’ll start our hike along the Pomo Trail to the top of Red Hill. If it’s clear we’ll have views from Point Reyes in the south to Fort Ross in the north. Then it’s on to Wright’s Beach along the Kortum Trail section of the California Coastal Trail, with an option of a northerly loop to visit the Sunset Rocks rising out of the coastal terrace.
Thursday we’ll walk along the bluff tops and Highway 1 south through Sonoma Coast State Beach, and then swing through the Carrington Coast Ranch. We’ll do some beach walking at Salmon Creek and catch up with our gear and camp for the night at Cypress Dunes Campground.
On Friday July 18 we’ll hike along South Salmon Creek Beach and then head up through the dunes to the University of California Marine Laboratory for a guided tour of the facility. We will then continue around Bodega Head ending at the infamous “Hole in the Head”, the initial 1960’s excavations for a proposed PG&E nuclear power plant sitting astride the San Andreas Fault. The hardy are then welcome to walk the 3 miles along Bay Flat Road back to our campsite. Coastwalk will provide a shuttle service for those who would prefer an afternoon rest in camp.
Saturday July 19 we’ll say our good-byes after a scrumptious send off pancake breakfast. Those who need to leave early will be provided a shuttle back to the vehicles in Jenner. Coastwalk will facilitate kayak rentals for walkers who’d like to spend some time on the water. An after-kayak shuttle to Jenner will be provided.
The Sonoma County Coastwalk volunteers look forward to sharing our beautiful coastline with you this summer!
