Autumn in Del Norte: A Hiking Adventure

Northern California’s ancient Redwood National and State Parks offer trails of solitude and grandeur. From bluff top seascapes to seaside tide pools, savor the “land that time forgot”. View wild elk, explore serpentine Fern Canyon with its walls of cascading ferns and follow the remnants of a 1930s coastal road to secluded beaches. Explore where wild seals play amid sea stacks while pelicans and cormorants scan the shore waters.

Your home, the Historic Requa Inn, located near the mouth of the Klamath River on the Yurok Indian Reservation provides an atmosphere of serenity, wonderful views, and delicious food and wine. Local guides and naturalists will share with you their firsthand experiences of trails, legends and their efforts to protect and restore the wonders that abound here. You will walk away refreshed with memories not to be forgotten.

Itinerary:

On Wednesday afternoon, September 3, we check-in to the Requa Inn and meet for a Coastwalk orientation and dinner.

After a hearty breakfast on Thursday, September 4, we jump in our bus and travel across the Klamath River to the Coastal Road. Stopping to view the mouth of the Klamath River and a World War II secret radar installation, we arrive at the Carruthers Cove trailhead. Traveling down the hill, we arrive at the beach and turn south to hike the coastal trail for six miles to Fern Canyon.  We return by bus to the Inn for dinner and a naturalist program.

We travel by bus again on Friday, September 5, to the Damnation Creek trailhead and hike portions of an old Redwood road until we come out on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Then we travel down to Nickel Creek Beach for tidepooling and after hiking 6 miles, we finally end up at Enderts Beach overlook for expansive views of the entire Crescent City shorefront. We again return by bus to the Inn for our final dinner and another naturalist program.

After check out on Saturday, September 6, we aren’t ready to go home yet so we join the group for an optional 4 mile hike. This hike starts at the spectacular Klamath River overlook, 600 feet above the mouth of the Klamath River and ends at False Klamath Cove.

Moderate Walk: Some elevation gain and loss on established trails, some walking on soft sand and over cobbles, boulders and uneven trails.
