Imagine having a State Park all to yourself!

Now – make that come true with Coastwalk!

Coastwalk is offering the chance to visit Sonoma County’s picturesque Fort Ross State Historical Park for a rare overnight stay. Plus, participants will have the chance to help Coastwalk mark the California Coastal Trail within the park by installing guiding signs along its route.

We’ll meet Saturday morning at the fort and after introductions do what Coastwalkers do best – take a hike. Hike leaders will include Bill Walton, retired State Parks ranger. We’ll be able to walk the starkly beautiful coastal bluffs, visit the old Russian orchard, or see sag ponds along the San Andreas Fault.

Back at the fort the fun is just beginning. We’ll bring in our camping gear for the night’s stay as soon as the general public has gone– and either tent within the fort grounds or roll out a sleeping bag in one of the old fort buildings. Don’t forget your sleeping pad or air mattress – the wooden floors of the fort get harder as the night goes on! While the Coastwalkers are getting settled in, Coastwalk volunteers will be preparing a banquet suitable to the setting. Dinner over, we’ll be able to learn about the fort’s history and settle in around the campfire for a Coastwalk songfest.

Sunday, after a Coastwalk-provided breakfast (participants need only bring their own lunch, water and snack materials for both days) we’ll clear our gear out of the fort and then get to “work” installing California Coastal Trail signs in the Fort Ross Cove section of the trail, doing our part to help make Coastwalk’s dream of a completed coastal trail a reality.
