We begin our adventure Friday with a ferry trip from Tiburon to Angel Island, the jewel of the San Francisco Bay. We’ll spend two days and nights on the island exploring its natural and man made history. We’ll hike to the top for a 360 degree view of the Bay. Along the way we’ll pass through five micro climates and visit the sites of several of the historic hospitals on the island. We’ll have a docent tour of the civil war era West Garrison. Our visit to the Immigration Center is a trip back in time to when many Asian immigrants were imprisoned there while waiting to learn if they would be admitted to the US. The poems they carved on the walls depicting their despair are still visible.
Each day snacks and drinks greet us as we arrive in the late afternoon at our home base -- a converted Quarter Master’s building at the waterside. The rest of the tourists leave on the last ferry and we are left alone to to be greeted by a family of deer that graze every evening nearby. Kids love to explore the small cove. After a fantastic meal we’ll relax and watch the sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge and watch the lights come on in the City.
Angel Island is beautiful, fascinating, and an amazing wild place in the middle of an urban center. The opportunity to stay there over night, after the visitors have left is a treasure. Virtually everyone who has come on this adventure has loved it – and you will too. Please join us.
